Best Mouth Tape for Sleep: What Each Tape Is Made For, and Who Should Skip It

Mouth tape has become a social media sleep habit. When the American Academy of Sleep Medicine surveyed people in 2023, 12 percent said they had tried it. I tape my mouth at night myself. I am not going to name a tape as mine on this page, and nothing below is presented as something I use.

What I can do is tell you what the options are, what the companies that make them say they are for, and who should not be doing this at all without talking to a doctor first.

Read this before you buy anything

Mouth tape is only for people who can breathe comfortably through their nose while lying down. If your nose is blocked, from a cold, allergies or a deviated septum, taping your mouth shut is a bad idea.

It is also not a treatment for sleep apnea. If you snore loudly, wake up gasping, or feel wrecked after a full night in bed, get checked for sleep apnea before you tape anything. The American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy puts it plainly: “Taping the mouth is not a treatment for sleep apnea.” The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has called mouth taping “dangerous” and warned that viral sleep trends are, at best, “unproven.”

The five kinds of mouth tape

Almost everything sold for mouth taping falls into one of five groups.

Paper surgical tape. The classic is 3M Micropore, the thin white paper tape in every hospital supply closet. It is cheap, breathable and easy to tear. The adhesive is an acrylate, the same kind used on most medical tapes.

Silicone medical tape. Micropore S, sold to consumers as Nexcare Strong Yet Pain Free tape, uses a silicone adhesive instead. 3M describes it as gentler on skin, and it can be lifted and repositioned. If paper tape pulls at your lips in the morning, this is the obvious step to try.

Plastic surgical tape. 3M Transpore is a clear, perforated plastic tape. 3M lists it as water resistant. It holds harder than paper, and it comes off harder too.

Vented strips. SomniFix makes adhesive strips with a woven mesh vent in the middle. The company says the vent lets a little air through the lips. That is the brand’s description of its own product.

Fabric strips. Hostage Tape is a fabric strip that goes across the lips. Its own site says to use it only “if you can breathe through your nose when lying down,” and to skip it on nights you are congested.

What 3M says the tapes are for

This part surprises people. 3M’s product pages describe Micropore as a “multi-purpose medical paper tape” for things like blood draws, light dressings and holding lines in place. Transpore is described for securing things to “intact skin.” Neither page says a word about lips, mouths or sleep.

That does not mean medical tape is dangerous on your lips. It means the people who make it have not tested it for that, and they do not claim to have. The small studies I found used silicone medical tape or patches made for the job, and the researchers screened people carefully first.

Picking between them

  • Try silicone first if you have sensitive skin. Paper and plastic tapes use a stronger acrylate adhesive, and the skin around your lips is thin.
  • Use less than you think. A small strip over the centre of the lips covers less skin than sealing the whole mouth, and comes off more easily.
  • Skip it on congested nights. Even the brands that sell mouth tape say this.
  • Stop if it makes things worse. Waking more often, gasping, or feeling worse in the morning is a reason to stop and see a doctor.

If your nose is the problem

A lot of people reach for mouth tape because they cannot breathe well through their nose at night. Taping the mouth does not fix that. It removes the backup.

Nasal strips work on the other end. They are springy bands that sit across the bridge of the nose and pull the nostrils open a little. They do nothing for a mouth that falls open, but they are a much safer first thing to try if congestion is the reason you breathe through your mouth.

Breathe Right Extra Strength Clear (for a blocked nose)

Breathe Right Extra Strength clear nasal strips box

What the research says, briefly

Not much, and not strongly. A 2025 systematic review in PLOS One found 10 studies with about 200 patients between them, rated all of the mouth taping studies as poor quality, and concluded that the data “does not support mouth taping” as a treatment for sleep disordered breathing in the general population. Four of those studies raised the risk of suffocation in people with a blocked nose.

The small studies that did find a benefit were in people with mild sleep apnea who breathed through their mouths and had clear noses. One of them used silicone tape for a week in 20 people. There was no comparison group. The authors themselves said it should not be used in moderate or severe apnea.

Quick questions

Is 3M Micropore safe for mouth taping?
3M does not say it is made for that. Its pages describe it for clinical use on skin. People do use it, and some small studies used 3M silicone tape, but that is not the same as the maker saying it is fine on your lips overnight.

Micropore or Transpore?
Micropore is paper and gentler. Transpore is plastic and holds harder. If you are going to try either, start with the gentler one, or with the silicone version.

Can I mouth tape with a stuffy nose?
No. Even the companies selling mouth tape say to skip it when you are congested.

Will mouth tape stop snoring?
It might for some people and it might not for others. The honest answer is that the studies are too small to say, and snoring can be a sign of sleep apnea, which tape does not treat.

Can I use mouth tape with a CPAP?
One 2025 trial found that adding tape helped some people with mouth leaks use their CPAP longer. That is a question for whoever set up your CPAP, not something to try on your own.

The bottom line

The tapes people use are real medical products, but none of them were made for your mouth, and the evidence that taping helps is thin. If you can breathe freely through your nose and you have been checked for sleep apnea, a small strip of gentle silicone tape is the cautious place to start. If you cannot, or you have not, start with your nose and your doctor instead.

About Alex Anderson

I got tired of reading ingredient labels and finding seed oils, BPA, and endocrine disruptors in everything I brought into my home. So I started this site to share what I actually buy, cook with, clean with, and use day to day. Most of those products link out to Amazon. Using those links costs you nothing (Amazon sometimes has a coupon clipped on the product page), and the small commission helps cover the hosting bill. No sponsors, no brand deals. Just real products I keep in my own kitchen, laundry room, bathroom, and pantry. Not all of it comes from Amazon, though. Grass-fed beef, pasture-raised chicken and eggs, grass-fed butter and sourdough I buy at the farmers market when I can, because it beats the store and it supports my community.
